The Importance of Junior Golf

Tellico Village has been offering Junior Golf Camp for over 25 years. Adam Jacob, Head Golf Professional at Toqua Golf Club, has experienced 18 summers of camp here in the Village. Jacob says that Junior Camp is one of his favorite weeks of the year, as he welcomes the change of pace and the excitement the kids bring. Not only is it a week of learning and fun, it’s also a week of bonding with grandparents and making memories. His favorite thing about camp is seeing the repeat juniors coming back year after year and seeing the improvements they have made. Josh Phillips is one of those kids that grew up coming to camp in the summertime and spending time with his grandparents Keith and Annette Schmidt. Josh came to his first camp when he was just 7 years old.

Josh and his family moved from Franklin, Tennessee to New Hampshire last year. While he is still adjusting to the courses throughout New Hampshire, he is also settling in to at-home learning due to the pandemic. However, this superstar is taking it all in stride. The Oyster River High School sophomore recently finished a near-perfect debut season. Here’s a list of his recent accomplishments:

  • NHIAA 2020 Division II Individual State Golf Champion.
  • Oyster River – 2020 Division II State Runner UP – highest finish in school history
  • NHIAA 2020 1st Team Unanimous All State Selection – Boys Golf
  • Nominated for Seacoast HS Male Athlete of the Year

Phillips hopes to make some noise in tournaments like the Seacoast Am and New Hampshire Amateur in 2021. Josh and his family spent most of March in Tellico Village and Josh played in the Sneds Elite Series Tour in Cleveland, Tennessee. Josh and his father, Brett Phillips, have been enjoying the beautiful courses of Tellico Village and the mild winter weather. Josh has made some wonderful memories here over the years and his grandparents are very proud of his accomplishments. We look forward to hearing more great things about Josh and all those junior golfers that we have been blessed to have with us over the years. Tellico Village is very involved with junior golf in its efforts to grow the game. We serve as home to one middle school program, as well as four high school teams. Tellico Village also hosts several local and statewide tournament events.

Villagers Donate to Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee

In the small town of Hohenwald, TN exists a little piece of heaven for some lucky elephants.

 

The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee:

– provides captive elephants with individualized care, the companionship of a herd, and the opportunity to live out their lives in a safe haven dedicated to their well-being

– educates the public of the complex needs of elephants in captivity and the crisis facing elephants in the wild.

The elephants’ habitats are closed to the public.

 

The Sanctuary is currently home to 11 elephants retired from zoos and circuses, many of whom suffer long-term health and behavioral issues common to elephants that have spent their lives in captivity. The Sanctuary employs a fully integrated team of veterinarians and caregivers who provide high-quality care by using positive reinforcement and protected contact to safely meet the needs of each elephant.

The Sanctuary is licensed by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA), accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), and certified by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

 

For the second year in a row, Tellico Village resident Lynda Parker collected and delivered discarded Christmas trees to the sanctuary. Parker is the president of the Tellico Village Naturalist Club and has been an animal lover her entire life. When she heard of the sanctuary’s need for greenery, she enlisted a group of her friends to collect trees from the community. Trees provide food for the elephants as well as play and entertainment. When it’s all said and done, a Christmas tree may whittle down to a mere stick. Parker is already looking forward to next year. The sanctuary also is in need of donations to care for the animals throughout the entire year.

 

Tellico Village is located in Loudon, Tennessee. It is known for its generous volunteers and giving spirit. There are over 200 clubs and organizations to get involved with and make new friends. Villagers are known to say “ Tell ‘em I retired from work, but not from doing good works.”

Bike Riding in Tellico Village

The Tellico Village Recreation Department in Loudon, TN rolled out new activities and amenities for the community to enjoy in 2021.

Tellico Village Recreation Director Simon Bradbury announced on December 22, 2020 that a new bike trail system will be featured at all three Tellico Village golf courses. The courses include Tanasi Golf Club, Toqua Golf Club and The Links at Kahite. The courses offer gentle rolling hills, wooded areas, lush greens and lakefront views of Tellico Lake.

“People have been wanting places to bike in the Village for a long time,” Bradbury said. “As new people are coming in, they’re asking, ‘Where can I go biking?’” Bradbury, thinking outside the box for new ways to utilize amenities we already have, realized that we’ve got some paved trails already in existence. Bradbury went to Chris Sykes, Tellico Village Director of Golf, and the two brainstormed the idea.

The trails consist of cart paths and roads on each golf course. Sykes believes this is a prime opportunity to implement something many Villagers living around the courses have wanted for years. Tellico Village is an active 55+ community in Loudon, TN, and an active lifestyle is a common thing here. This is a perfect solution to give the people what they are asking for, utilize space and resources and keep people safe and healthy.

“There’s been a desire for more parkland-type areas within Tellico Village. Villagers have always used the courses before and after golf hours, but we’ve added some parameters for the parkland activity. People routinely walk their dogs, exercise or run the golf courses ahead of play or in the evening after play. We devised a plan of action for folks to be able to do that and to do it as safely as possible.”

Each bike tour lasts an hour and is guided by Sykes, Bradbury or another staff member.

It was also announced that a new mountain biking group will meet on the Tellico Village Wellness Center’s new off-road biking trails.

“It has worked out beautifully, since recreational outdoor activities has sky-rocketed due to COVID,” Sykes said.

The Links at Kahite Golf Course

The Links at Kahite Golf Course and Clubhouse is Tellico Village’s newest 18-hole championship course. The Links at Kahite opened in 2002 and is a true links-style course with very unusual design characteristics. The course meanders through a beautiful natural setting and offers spectacular panoramic views of the Smoky Mountains. It has 6 sets of tees that play from 7,170 yards to 4,435 yards.

Among Kahite’s challenges are the 93 bunkers on the course, with 12 of those being on hole number 18. The famous 9th hole is an 808-yard par 6. Kahite features Bentgrass greens and Bermuda fairways. The tall fescue lining some of the fairways provides for outstanding shot framing and plenty of penalty for the wayward drive. The Links at Kahite was nominated in 2003 to Golf Digest as best new private course. It has since hosted many Tennessee Golf Association events, including the 2006 Junior Amateur Qualifier, the 2008 Women’s Senior Amateur Championship, and the 2009 Four-Ball and Senior Four-Ball Championships. It also hosted the 2009 and 2010 PGA Tour Nationwide Open Qualifier.

The Links at Kahite features the Village’s newest driving range facility and practice putting green. The Kahite Clubhouse offers great casual dining and an outdoor patio for post-game refreshments.

Spotlight on Tanasi Golf Course in Tellico Village

The Tanasi Golf Course in Tellico Village opened in 1996 and was the 2nd of the three courses built in Tellico Village. The 18-hole layout incorporates Tellico Lake to enhance the beauty of the facility and features Crenshaw Bentgrass greens and Bermuda fairways. Tanasi is much different than the other courses in its design. The course is more open and has much bigger greens than the other two golf courses.

Holes 8, 9, and 10 bring the lake into play off the tee, offering some of the most scenic and challenging holes on the course. This championship course has 7 sets of tees that play from 6,731 yards to 4,480 yards. The course is loaded with tough elevated greens characterized by undulation and surrounding bunkers. Tanasi’s 9th hole is a 3-tiered, downward-sloping fairway with a unique approach shot over a portion of Tellico Lake. The Tanasi golf course also boasts some fun holes, including the double-dogleg par 5 hole number 13, and subsequent hole 14- a par 3 that requires the golfer to hit over a small pond onto an elevated green that slopes to the front.

Spotlight On Toqua Golf Course

Toqua Golf Course, Clubhouse & Pavilion opened in 1987 and extensively renovated in 2008. The Toqua Course features a classic design built into an exquisite natural setting. There are several holes playing alongside Tellico Lake and others winding through hills and valleys.

Toqua is a beautiful golf course cut through a forest on Tellico Lake. You have everything from tree-lined holes to a links setting on the lake.
